Butterfly House
Breathtaking coastline and some of the best of midcentury architecture make for a heart-stopping combo. Source.

Along Scenic Drive in Carmel, California, the 1951 “Butterfly House” sits atop a rock outcropping, bordered by Monterey cypress trees. Tourists enjoying the drive will undoubtedly snap photos of this unique house with its wing-shaped roof and incredible architecture, designed by architect Frank Wynkoop and completed in 1951.

While a busy architect in his lifetime, the Butterfly House is Wynkoop’s most famous structure. The interior is designed around an open courtyard with a pool, and naturally, the interior living areas are oriented toward the stunning view of the Pacific and world-famous Big Sur coastline.

Breathtaking coastline and some of the best of midcentury architecture make for a heart-stopping combo. While the Butterfly House is privately owned and not available to tour, the public Scenic Drive will get you a good view of the exterior and scenery. To see the home’s interior as of 2011, check out this post.
