Midcentury Modern House George Nelson
Inside, the fireplace is a show stopping feature.
Throughout the home original features have been restored to their previous glory.

Midcentury modern house hunters beware: You may be moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan. Look at this dream home created by George Nelson—the iconic modernist designer and architect—currently on the market for $450,000. The home has been lovingly restored and preserved by its soon-to-be-previous owner, Dave Corner.

The midcentury modern house was originally designed for the Kirkpatrick family, and from 1955 to 1958 Nelson worked with his colleague Gordon Chadwick to create their dream home. With 3,5000 square feet, two stories and four bedrooms set on two and a half acres on a wooded lot, the sprawling home is a stunning example of Nelson’s artistry.

A massive expanse of windows across both stories takes full advantage of the home’s beautiful wooded location.

Even the kitchen boasts views of the woods—but it may be the brick wall, wood paneling and original color scheme that steals the show here.

Nelson’s steel-frame structure was designed with a flat roof, quintessentially large windows to take in the views of its secluded location, and sports both brick and wood-paneled walls.

The lucky buyer of this midcentury masterpiece not only gets a dream home by a beloved architect and designer—they will also inherit much of Dave’s collection of vintage Herman Miller furnishings. Dave is also including the letters written between the Kirkpatrick family and Nelson during the design process, as well as photos, drawings, plans, and even a book and magazine in which the home was featured when it was first completed.

Dave stumbled upon the home when he purchased a set of dressers from the previous owners. A year later they called Dave to tell him they were putting the house on the market and he swooped it up. This may very well be your opportunity to swoop in on a dreamy Midcentury Modern house.
