West Seattle House Tour Kitchen Cabinets
The appliance placement is similar to the old kitchen, but the homeowners lost some storage when the room was opened up to the living area. Custom walnut cabinetry, butcher block and 3/4″-thick PentalQuartz honed counters, along with back-painted glass backsplashes, were the surfaces the homeowners chose for their new version. The dishwasher is a Bosch, while the wine fridge is a U-Line and the faucet a Blanco Culina. To the left of the BlueStar range and the Vent-A-Hood is a walnut-clad Liebherr fridge. The Tibetan barstools were recently painted orange to match other accents in the room, like the trim around the glassware storage drawers.

This West Seattle ranch remodel hit its fair share of hurdles. From an uneven deck (part 1) to replacing the doors and windows (part 2), the homeowners Amy Trulson and Ben Farrow had to be adaptable and work with what they were given. But when it came to the kitchen, the couple finally had their say with the settling house, opting for the exact details they wanted, like beautiful kitchen cabinets and bathroom details.

The couple had a list of quirks and issues that they wanted to address on the home’s main floor. They contemplated keeping the original kitchen cabinets, but instead decided on new custom walnut cabinetry with modern closing mechanisms and adding a butcher block island. Trulson and Farrow had about 60 percent of the details and resources pre-chosen, while general contractor Michael Bellan of Bellan Construction, supplied other ideas and a cadre of talented subs. Bellan Shopworks built all of the cabinetry in the baths, kitchen and bedrooms. “We really liked that they had their own cabinetry shop so we could do some details that riff off [elements] we’d seen from custom cabinetmakers; that was enticing,” says Trulson. Pental Quartz honed counters, back-painted glass complete the kitchen in style that compliments the rest of the home, modern style that references mid-century sensibilities.

Finally, Farrow and Trulson had a home they loved, and they never regretted their decision to tackle this West Seattle challenge. A remodel is no walk in the park—from picking out the kitchen cabinets that work with the right aesthetic to finding architectural weak spots that might cause you trouble.
